Literally. Antti and Jani were on tour with Sharpeville in the summer of 1998 and then one fine day their van caught fire in Potsdam, Germany. Totalled. They were stuck in the city for a number of days and while killing time in various squats they started discussing putting together a band of a more melodic sort. This plan was soon put into action. After getting back to Finland they asked Jukka whether he'd be interested in playing bass for them. Jukka was interested in the band but insisted on playing drums instead as he had more experience with that sort of din. Jani was originally meant to play guitar but in these circumstances he switched himself into the "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do mode" and took up bass instead. Antti took up the role of the axeman and main vocalist and MJ was on its way. A string of releases, broken limbs, tours, chilly sleeping places, sleep deprivation, dodgy vans, even dodgier rental companies, tons of pasta and rice and a whole lotta punk rock racket was to follow. In the beginning there was sound. And to begin with we were very spread out. Jani and Antti were living in the south of Finland (Helsinki and Hämeenlinna respectively) whereas Jukka was located in Oulu, some 600 km up north. This made practising a bit tricky but somehow we managed to more or less pull it off. We were able to practise a bit more when Jukka was attending his apprenticeship courses in Helsinki a few weeks at the time during 98/99. Right after New Year's celebrations (and feeling the aftereffects...) in January 1999 we recorded our first two tracks for the anti-militarist benefit compilation-CD called "Farewell to Arms 2". Then the typical (as we were to learn in the course of the following years) MJ luck entered the scene - Antti broke his wrist in a fierce fight with a bus stop (just don't ask) so we had an improvised line-up of Jani playing guitar, Tommi (Unkind) playing bass and Antti just leaning on the microphone stand and strutting his stuff for our first couple of gigs which were organized to celebrate the release of the CD. We started playing out as much as we could. Good fun for the whole family. In the spring, all limbs functioning, we went and recorded our first 7" and then hit the road with our friends Wasted in the autumn, touring Europe for a few weeks. We were lucky to be driven around by a tall figure permanently surrounded by the sweet scent of patchouli oil and with a face full of teeth called Pekka, who's been doing most of our tours with us ever since. Life was good. The spring of 2000 saw us cruising down the autobahns again, together with Wasted. In the summer we recorded our first album "Desire" (released by Combat Rock Industry and Nabate) and then took off for our longest tour so far, doing six weeks all around Europe with Endstand. Got to go to fucking Spain and Portugal! Never been that far to the south, it was just amazing. In the year of 2001 we kept ourselves busy as well. Recorded a couple of tracks for a split-ep with I Excuse from Japan for Snuffy Smile , did two tours in the continental Europe and one in the UK. Jukka was starting to find living and working in the North a tad difficult when most of the weekends and holidays were spent down south either gigging or practising. Sitting in trains for hours an end was starting to lose its initial glamour, so he decided to pull up his roots and relocate in Tampere. Jani had already moved there and Antti followed suit soon after so finally, oh finally, we were all living in the same city. You could say that despite occasional trouble with finding practise places playing together got to be a bit easier. 2002 proved out to be the busiest period for us so far. We recorded an album called "Remedy" to be released on BYO Records in the US and made up plans for some serious touring. After some, erm, creative financial schemes we went ahead and did it - two weeks in Japan, seven weeks in the States followed by five weeks in Europe almost back to back, from mid-July to the beginning of December. It was crazy. And wonderful. We got back with our sanity relatively intact and kicked back for a while to recover a bit. We had been talking about trying to find a new bass player so Jani could switch on to playing guitar and finally in 2003 found the right guy. Ville (of ex-Rebound and Palokka-zine fame, from Jyväskylä) joined the band, thus making our tiny trio a groovy quartet. More gigs, more touring (UK with I Excuse in the summer and Europe with Endstand in the autumn), nothing much on the recording front. CRI put out an Euro pressing of our split with I excuse but that's it really. We were starting to feel a bit burned out by the heavy touring schedule and decided to take a bit of a breather at the end of the year. No resting on our laurels though - Antti and Jani were busy with I Walk The Line, Jani had also the CRI label + distro going, Jukka was playing with Lähempänä Loppua and Ville played in Delta Force 2 and Deathbed. After Jukka got back from being the stand-in drummer for Harum-Scarum in the spring of 2004 MJ got active again. We had a split-EP with Minority Blues Band out on Snuffy Smile and were lucky to tour Japan again for the second time, followed by a short Scandi-stint with Turbostaat from Germany. A pretty easy going year as far as gigs are concerned and the same holds true for most of 2005 as well. Due to work and school commitments we were only able to do a short two-week tour in Germany w/Hallo Kwitten. We had slowly (if you wanted to find the slowest band on Earth, look no further) been writing new material and started recording our new album late in 2005 as well as booking yet another European tour for the summer of 2006. In early 2006 another big change was due. Jani left the band as he found it hard to split his time between MJ, IWTL and CRI (who had also opened a record shop in Helsinki). Things were looking a bit grim but we got the album done and then found a new guitar player by the name of Heikki (also of Abduktio/Lähempänä Loppua fame). Jani did his last gigs with MJ in the same spring after the new album "Strain" (CRI/Unsociable) came out - thanks for all these years! Of course nothing can ever be simple when this very bunch of losers is concerned - Abduktio had already booked a tour for June before Heikki joined the band he wouldn't be able to do it. We were determined to pull the damn thing off and were lucky to get Lasse (Hero Dishonest/The Heartburns) to help us out on guitar and to handle the duties of a freelance barman. We got warmed up with a few gigs with The Sons Of Saturn in Finland and then did Europe. Lasse did an amazing job and we enjoyed our road trip to the marvels of Europe. At the moment we are writing and practising new material for our next record - just don't dare to ask when it will be out! Some touring plans for next year as well. Thanks and see you. |
